The Senate voted 22-11 to pass the bill, which was approved earlier by the House. It will become law if signed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. State law does not require permits to own guns, keep them in a home or business or carry them openly. However, state law until now has required that people have permits to carry concealed guns. The bill would let South Dakota residents carry concealed weapons within the state without a permit if they have a valid driver's license and would meet current requirements for getting a concealed pistol permit."

This actually means little to me as South Dakota recognizes my Alabama permit, and, I am, therefore, covered when I go home to visit. But, it is nice to see more people not giving a fuzzy rat's butt about the average citizen being armed, and not just outside their pants for the whole world to see.

The Honest Gun Owner Tag

Well, as always, I am slow and behind and late... anyway, here goes...
1. If you can go on about the esoterics of innumerous models of AR- / M- / XM- / C### numbered rifles and how your various builds are going. You, sir, are an honest gun owner. McThag
2. If you refuse to wear cloth that covers your legs, tote a pistol with you while you are fishing and have the resolve to not go purchase every neat little whiz bang that comes along, you... yes you, are an honest gun owner. Robb
3. If your wife rearranges your gun gear and you are too many thousands of miles away to prevent it, you... and your wife... are honest gun owners. Greg & Beth
4. If you host a series that works to shine the light of truth on "Gun Death" prejudices, and you put up with my tired, non-talkative @ss that couldn't remember your damn name at the Central Florida Blogmeet last year... You, sir, are an honest gun owner. Weer'd
That covers people that I have met that still run a blog, that I am aware of. All decent folks, who by chance I was privileged to meet. All seem to be good folks, and more than a few of who I look forward to seeing again when next my wife and I travel to Tampa to visit her folks. This, of course, presumes that they wouldn't mind hoisting a beverage with yours truly. ;)

Starbucks
because I like their coffee. Drove out of our way today... because we appreciate a corporation that doesn't feel the need to be a nanny.
And, in related news... I found a 1944 Remington Rand 1911A1 tonight... price tag... $600... yeah, for real. What's wrong with it... some one has reparked it covering every marking except a real faint "No." and the serial number, replaced the grips with Pacs and has replaced the mainspring housing with some rubberized flat p.o.s.
Fiddled with that stupid gun for the better part of an hour and finally, walked away from it.
Of course, a few miles down the road, I called them and told them to stick my name on it and I would be back for it.
Such a sucker for a 1911 I am and I have been hunting a 1940's (specifically 1941 to 1945) version for awhile now.
And lastly, yeah, my wife and I went to the gun store on Valentine's day. ;)

My Query Submitted to the American Legion Magazine...
regarding the 90% quote found in a story in the June 2009 issue.

Please allow me to start by saying that I truly appreciate all that the Legion does and what it stands for. The what it stands for is why I am writing this mail. On page 27 near the bottom of the right hand column, in the story titled The WAR Next Door written by Jay Stuller, there is a quote attributed to Dianne Feinstein. It is the same “90% of the firearms found at Mexican crime scenes originated in the US” quote. How is it that this lie came to be printed in our magazine?
If I should get a response, I will most happily post it.

An interesting place to read this...
I have been behind in nearly every aspect of normalcy as of late with all of the rush to plant and vacation and equipment malf's at work. So, I am just now beginning to get on periodicals that have been lying about for awhile. Having said that, I began reading the June 2009 edition of the American Legion magazine last night and got as far as the middle.
There is a story titled "The WAR Next Door" written by Jay Stuller appearing on pages 24 through 28. In the subsection titled 'Fear, Loathing and a Little Help From Up North.' (p.27), the following quotation is made...
"It's unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and are used to shoot judges, police officers, mayors, kidnap innocent people and do terrible things come from the United States," says Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
Why... is... this... LIE being repeated? In fact, if this story, talking about the internal strife in Mexico and its possibility for becoming a failed state, were to aim a little closer at the nail head, it may want to talk more about the illicit military arms that are making their way into Mexico and a little less about the illicit civilian arms.
Yes, illicit arms are a real problem in Mexico. Yes, some fraction of them are purchased by "straw buyers" in the US and moved across the border. If there is an outcry for all of the other sources to quit it (like from the US .gov to the MX .gov and then toted off to gangland with the deserters), I would surely like to hear it. As for the illegal transfer of US civilian arms to Mexico... build that fence, man that fence, arm that fence and outfit that fence with enhanced tunnel locating hardware.
As for this sort of thing showing up in the American Legion magazine... unconscionable is the only word that I can come up with.

Which means anyone who has a gate and a fence can ignore this legislation.

More on the illegal guns post from earlier...
I have had this thought ruminating about my skull for the last few days and every time that I am on here... I have other things running.
We keep hearing about the firearms that are confiscated at Mexican crime scenes that originate in the US. Why do we not keep hearing about the "imported" criminals we keep rounding up at US crime scenes? Which, incidentally, is anywhere that they are rounded up... being illegal and all. I mean really, how is it that inanimate objects controlled by mammals become more of a story than mammals controlling inanimate objects? Yes dear, that is also a rhetorical question.
This whole line of thought begs the question... who/what is in charge? Is it the humanoid behind the gun or the gun in front of the humanoid? IMHO... Larry the Cable Guy says it best. If Smith & Wesson et al. can be sued for the deaths caused by their firearms, then Hustler magazine can be sued for my wrist developing carpal tunnel syndrome and my pencil manufacturer can be sued for me misspelling werdz.
So again I say... they are mad about firearms flowing South. Good. I am mad about undocumented, illegal, law-breaking (department of redundancy department) migrants flowing North. How about we all work together to stop the bi-directional flow of things/objects/persons that chap our @sses?
Sounds like a viable "fence" is needed on both our parts. How about DHS work out a plan with the .mx to build two independent and secure nations that do not revolve around removing people's rights... instead of profiling those whom they should hope would be on their side?

The substitution exempts railroads from the provisions of this bill. It is not like adding them to the exemption list is a big deal. There are many others like, "(2) An employer providing employees with a secure parking area which restricts general public access through the use of a gate, security station, security officers, or other similar means which limit public access into the parking area." Which means anyone who has a gate and a fence can ignore this legislation.
